When I first started like 2-3 years ago, I just sent it. Some I tried to black out and they would not accept. But now it seems more are accepting ones that are blacked out. The last few new ones I have tried anyways. Now, I can understand why we would not like that. But from the other side, I think they mostly want to make sure they are not selling to anyone underage.

if they want age verification they can send the package with age verification/signature at the post office or your door.
This practice of collecting users ID's and storing them on their possibly overseas server is total shit. from a security standpoint and also from a liability standpoint.
it needs to stop folks. refusing to send your ID in and telling them why is a good starting point.
Hope you Mom's are listening. the landscape is changing.
