Is this typical? Got a gram of Phyto Hammertown, all sealed in the company mylar bag. This was my first shatter ever, and wow when I opened the bag the smell was super strong and pungent.

I get back home (same day) show it to my wife, smell was much fainter. .. next day I open the bag and zero smell, it's totally odorless.

Is this normal? The bag is a zip bag made of mylar and I zipped it shut every time.

Don't expect too much of a smell from shatter as typically its more stable with much less terpenes than other concentrates, given it's stable "shatter" like state.

If you wanted something that smelled great and had a higher terpene profile there are different concentrates from the lower end (budder/sugar wax) to higher end concentrates (FSE-Full Spectrum Extract, HCFSE-High Cannabanoid FSE). Shatter well for my uses I keep a large quantity of it since keeping it cool/relatively below room temperature can keep it stable for a long time, whereas storage of the other extracts if done improperly can result in a loss of terpenes when smoked.

Also, not sure if Phyto changed but there stuff isn't the greatest purged last time I tried it, and has a pretty bad rep overall with alot of the non-casual users. If you look plan on buying more concentrates int he future I'd definitely say look around/try some of the more respected/cheaper brands if you can.

Yeah well it was more of a test anyway, not big on dabbing. I got it from a friend before discovering MOM's.

Most of the terps would be locked inside the shatter, waiting to be released. What you smell from the outside is what's evaporating from the outer layer and if it's a stable (hard) shatter that will be minimal.

I even have some smelly terp sauce but once it settles into a jar it doesn't smell until I agitate it with my dab tool. Basically increasing the surface area that is in contact with oxygen releases terps but you actually want them to remain inside the concentrate in order to flavour your dab.

Personally I find flower loses its terps within a day or two of being kept inside plastic as well. I use sealed glass jars for all my buds and concentrates.
